The Undying Gratitude was the second pirate ship captained by Shurq Elalle after the first acquired in Letheras was sunk by a Marese escort in Laughter's End.[1] It was slightly bigger than the previous ship.[1] It sported twenty-four sweeps--long oars to propel it in calm waters.[1]

In Reaper's Gale[]

The Undying Gratitude stopped on the eastern shore of Jacuruku to let off Iron Bars and his surviving Crimson Guard after a successful season of piracy crossing the ocean. The last Shurq had seen of them on the beach before heavy rain obscured her view, the Guard had turned to face the approach of a dozen massively armoured figures. Skorgen Kaban thought he heard the clash of blades.[1]

After twenty months at sea, the Undying Gratitude was becalmed west of the Draconean Isles where it encountered a single battered Tiste Edur vessel. Thinking it had been destroyed by a bad storm and abandoned, they boarded in search of loot. On board they found signs of a battle and the single corpse of a Merude Elder, whom had been spiked to the floor and tortured with a knife. All of the ship's logs and charts were missing, but its hold was still filled with precious cargo--amphorae decorated with the image of a crucified Coltaine (although they did not recognise the Wickan) and filled with blood for sacred Edur rites. Without realising they had stumbled on the work of the Bonehunters, Shurq concluded that the attackers only sought information. Uneasy at the idea of being discovered by the Edur fleet and blamed for the carnage, Shurq set the ship ablaze and made haste to Letheras to sell off their booty and load up on crew.[2]

As they neared the mouth of the Lether River they were forced to change course by the sudden appearance of an Imperial fleet of Edur and Letherii ships coming from the southwest. Shurq decided to change her course, and head for Second Maiden Fort. they found the isle besieged by an onrushing mass of ice and just made it into the safety of the harbour ahead of it.[3] The isle and its leader, Brullyg, were held captive by the Bonehunters, who blockaded the port to prevent ships from leaving.[4]

Adjunct Tavore Paran hired Shurq to guide her fleet to the mouth of the Lether River. Shurq remained onboard the Adjunct's flagship, the Froth Wolf, while Skorgen captained the Undying Gratitude with the fleet.[5] Once the Adjunct's army disembarked near Letheras, Shurq returned to her ship.[6]

In Dust of Dreams[]

It sustained damage in the chaos which arose when Felash, a passenger, struck a deal with the Elder God Mael. To stop it from sinking and enable those on board to make it to the coast, Felash then employed Omtose Phellack, freezing not only the ice in the cracks but also water in the belly of the ship which eventually cracked the boards. Lacking suitable wood for repairs, the ship was abandoned.
