Captain Tazal Jhern was a former Malazan garrison commander in the Untan province of Quon Tali. He was a career soldier of an unnotable family.[1] Tazal had dark eyes.[2]
In Return of the Crimson Guard[]
During the Malazan civil war, Tazal was hastily promoted to captain and found himself advising Assembly spokesman Mallick Rel while Empress Laseen was campaigning against the rebel Talian League. He conveyed to Rel the news that Fortress Jurda had fallen to a Wickan incursion and recommended that the Malazans negotiate with the raiders while the Malaz 4th Army was away dealing with the more critical enemy. Rel heeded his advice, promoting him to Fist on the spot and sending him to meet the Wickans.[3]
Tazal met with the Wickan leadership, consisting of renegade Malazan Lieutenant Rillish Jal Keth and the mage twins Nil and Nether, just north of Unta. Tazal refused to speak directly to Rillish who he called a traitor.[4]

Tazal's name was sometimes spelled "Tazil" in Return of the Crimson Guard.[5]
