Ruel was a former Lord Protector of the Stormwall a millennium before the Malazan invasion of Korel. The Tower of Ruel's Tears, one of the Stormwall's primary fortifications, was named after him.[1]

Ruel was driven mad by visions of the Stormwall's collapse, the defeat of the Stormguard, and the victory of the Stormriders. He was so disturbed that he threw himself from the tower that would later bear his name.[2][3]
