Rancept

Rancept was the castellan of Tulla Hold. He was an older man, possibly over a thousand years old, who had his father's temper and enough brawn to make a bear cower. He had been in frequent tavern brawls in his youth resulting in a broken nose that resembled a pig's snout. His teeth were stained, uneven, and ragged and he wheezed when he climbed stairs.

When his duties as castellan took him outdoors he brought along his dog, Ribs, who possessed intelligence seemingly human in nature.

In Forge of Darkness

Rancept, Sukul Ankhadu, and Ribs left Tulla Hold in the night to investigate Orfantal's burning caravan. Along the way they passed through an ancient temple where Rancept had discovered the sleeping body of Burn. Rancept admitted to Sukul that he was secretly one of the Deniers, a nature sect that worshipped the old ways and did not idolize Mother Dark. He was tormented by the fact that he had entered the temple by hacking his way through the roots that turned out to be parts of Burn's body. But Sukul relieved his guilt when a chance burst of her laughter healed the goddess' wounds.
