Old Yara was a White Face Barghast warrior who was a prisoner of war of the Akrynnai, and functioned as the spokesman for all of the other Barghast prisoners. In the past, he had once fought in battle near One Eye Cat.

As well as other information, Old Yara told his captors about the Malazans, who he claimed had once been enemies of the Barghast back on Genabackis. He also spoke of their use of Moranth munitions in an attempt to explain the strange craters and massive earth movements which had appeared on a recent battlefield. He was, however, unable to explain why there would be any Malazans involved in this clash between the Barghast and the Akrynnai, nor had he heard of, nor seen any in the vicinity.[1]
