The Knight of Death was a position within High House Death[1] and was a servant of Hood.[2] The role was played by several characters during the entirety of the Malazan Book of the Fallen. It could be that the role was held by several characters at the same time.

In Gardens of the Moon[]

The first mentioned Knight of Death was Dassem Ultor who reputedly had made a deal with Hood,[3] but who had renounced the title after the Lord of Death took his daughter.[4][5]

In Memories of Ice[]

Hood sent a different Knight of Death to Capustan after the end of the Pannion Domin siege. The Knight protected the dying Mhybe from being acquired by the necromancer Korbal Broach. He carried two longswords (one of which was strangely bent) that he could not put down. This Knight of Death had no knowledge of his identity or of his previous life save the memory of burning in fire and failing to protect a child. The Knight, who could not sleep, thought himself dead, and Coll agreed.[2]

In House of Chains[]

It was later revealed that the Knight in Capustan was Baudin, who had perished on Seven Cities protecting Felisin Paran from Gryllen.[6][7] His sad death had attracted the attention of Hood himself, and the god had personally retrieved Baudin's body and soul. Cotillion told Cutter Hood had looked into the mortal's soul and made him his Knight of Death.[8][9]

In Toll the Hounds[]

The undead Seguleh Second called himself Knight of Death and was also addressed by Hood as Knight whereas Baudin was now named Soldier by him.[10]

In The God is Not Willing[]

Monkrat referred to the Bridgeburners as the Knights of Death,[11] ostensibly led by the limping guardian of Hood's Gate, Iskar Jarak.[12] Further, during a game of Fiddler's Gambit, it was revealed that a new card had appeared in the Deck of Dragons called Death's Company.[13]
