Gesler was a Falari[1] and corporal in the Malazan Coastal Guard.[2] He had originally been a captain under the Old Guard but was busted down to sergeant, then Corporal presumably in the wake of Laseen's restructuring of the command.

According to one of Moak's hunches, Gesler had been an under-age marine when he served either Dassem Ultor, Cartheron Crust, or Urko Crust.[3]

He was promoted back to captain during the events in Deadhouse Gates.[4] He was one of the last members of the Boar Cult. He and Stormy had been friends since they were young.[5]

In Deadhouse Gates Edit

Gesler was hired by Duiker during the Seven Cities rebellion (the Whirlwind) to pick up a fellow historian, Heboric Light Touch, from the Otataral Desert on a nearby island. Accompanying him were Stormy, Truth, and the mage Kulp. After rescuing the historian, he travelled briefly through a warren where he, Stormy, and Truth somehow began the process of becoming Ascendants. According to Beak, they were reforged in the fires of Tellann[6].

Gesler joined Coltaine's army and was punched in the face by the commander before accepting to be promoted. The punch broke Geslers nose and shattered Coltaine's hand.[7] Gesler was still referred to as Corporal after the event[8] so being called 'Captain' by Bult[9] might have referred to his command of the Silanda only.

In House of Chains Edit

He was sergeant of the 5th squad which included Stormy as corporal and Truth, Tavos Pond, Sands, and Pella.

His, Borduke's and Strings' squads had competing desert scorpions on which they wagered. Gesler's squad named their In Out scorpion "Clawmaster".

In The BonehuntersEdit

Gesler was one of those who escaped the Last Siege of Y'Ghatan by tunneling their way out of the city.[10]
