Filless was a cadre mage attached to the Fifth army who served under Ambassador Aragan as one of the direct links to the central command at Unta. She was a mage of Denul.[1]

Filless, Scarlon, and Went were busy in the Malazan Embassy cellar at Darujhistan, sorting through files for destruction before the evacuation of the embassy, when a slim young girl with a mane of long black hair approached them, and attacked with her warren, killing them all. Filless was the last to die because not only was she a mage of Denul, but she was also the last remaining Claw of the Fifth. After killing her, her assassin proceeded to mutilate her body just out of spite.[2]
With their deaths, all contact with Unta was lost because there was no one in the Fifth who could contact command directly. Aragan described their deaths as an opening move, a pre-emptive strike against the Malazans.
