Koryk [KOR-ick][1] was a young marine recruit in Fiddler's squad in the 8th Legion of the Malaz 14th Army.[2] He had a flat featured face, broad shoulders, and long black hair which had a tendency to whip across his face.[2] He was a huge[3] half Seti, and Fiddler guessed he was conflicted over his heritage. Although Koryk emulated the Seti by decorating himself with fetishes, he had chosen to enlist with the marines rather than the cavalry as would traditionally befit a Seti. Half-bloods did not have pleasant lives, in Fiddler's experience.[2][4]

Fiddler thought Koryk had the look and nature of the mailed fist that every squad needed.[5]

Koryk frequently came into conflict with Smiles, another member of his squad.

In House of Chains[]

Koryk journeyed to Aren as part of Adjunct Tavore Paran's army to retake Seven Cities after the Whirlwind rebellion. Unlike the rest of his squad mates, he had not been given a nickname by his drill master, Braven Tooth.[6] Based on his ability to read trail sign, Fiddler made him the squad's scout.[7]

On the way to battle the Army of the Apocalypse at Raraku, the army was stung several times by attacks from Leoman's desert raiders. Adjunct Tavore responded by laying an ambush for their opponents. During the fighting, Koryk bull rushed Leoman's lieutenant, Corabb, and the desert tribesman broke his tulwar over Koryk's skull. Koryk's helmet broke, but he suffered only an aching head.[8]

After the Battle of Raraku, Leoman led the Army of the Apocalypse westward to Y'Ghatan and the 14th Army followed. Koryk was one of the group of soldiers who survived the Last Siege of Y'Ghatan by escaping through tunneling their way out from under the city.[9]

When they returned to the main army, the survivors were given an assortment of random gifts collected by their joyous comrades. Koryk received a game of Bones, which he, Smiles, and Tarr played to kill time aboard the Silanda.[10]

In Dust of Dreams[]

He fell ill with the Letherii version of the shakes. After recovering he became a changed man, falling into a kind of depression, which made even Smiles turn away from him.
