Corporal Tarr was a marine in Sergeant Strings' 4th Squad in the Malaz 14th Army. He was a nondescript Hengan, with pale, stolid features and placid, pallid eyes.[1] He rarely spoke and was slow to act without orders, attributes Strings felt beneficial in a corporal.[1]
He was known for his unyielding stance with a shield. It was said that once during training, Master Sergeant Braven Tooth had spent nearly two bells pounding on him with a mace but was unable to get past the shield. His ability to remain unbudged once he planted his feet led the Master Sergeant to give him the name, "Tarr", as if his feet were stuck fast to the ground.[1][2] Tarr liked the idea of being unmovable and saw his role in the squad as being first to the front, giving the others time to bring whatever they had to bear.[2] Braven Tooth was convinced to place Tarr in the marines rather than the Heavy infantry based on his skill with a crossbow.[1]
Tarr designed his gear to allow him immediate action in combat. Rather than keep his oversized shield on his back like most soldiers, he carried it strapped to his left hand.[2] His equipment pack had quick-release clasps that allowed him to shed it with one hand, while the other reached for his short thick-bladed sword.[2] His scaled iron hauberk provided a satisfying anchoring weight.[2]
He spoke with a recognisable Hengan accent.[1]
In House of Chains[]
Tarr was part of Adjunct Tavore Paran's punitive expedition against the Army of the Apocalypse. Strings immediately promoted him to corporal upon their arrival in Aren.[1]
On the road to Raraku, he was the Trainer for Joyful Union, the 4th squad's entrant in the 9th Company Scorpion fight.[3]
In The Bonehunters[]
Tarr was one of the group of soldiers who survived the Last Siege of Y'Ghatan by escaping through tunneling their way out from under the city.[4]
In Reaper's Gale[]
Tarr thought that Corabb was trying to prove himself and outdo Tarr whereas in reality, Corabb stuck close to the corporal to protect the man's weak side even though it meant disobeying Fiddler's order of guarding Bottle.[5]

After Fiddler's promotion to Captain, Tarr took over as Sergeant. He promoted Corabb to be his Corporal. Tarr was described as having a greying beard.[6]
