Enesh-jer was a Grisian noble who had served as a young lieutenant in the Malazan 6th Army that mutinied during the Korelri Campaign.[1] As one of the Malazan occupiers, he became part of the new found nobility in the Lands of Fist, serving as an Envoy of the Overlord.

He had fully adopted worship of the Lady, patron goddess of Fist, as her presence was tangible while the gods of the Malazan Empire were denied access. He owed his position within the military command to his fervent devotion rather than his martial skills, and he and his staff were more priests than commanders.[2]

Enesh-jer had a lean hound's head, and his face looked drawn and skull-like, especially when he was under strain.[3] His official uniform included a rich fur cloak, gold rings on his fingers, and a thin silver circlet.[4]

In Stonewielder[]

The Overlord appointed Enesh-jer to lead the response to the invasion of the Malazan Expeditionary Force. The Envoy accompanied his forty thousand Roolian troops, six thousand Malazan 6th Army veterans, and one thousand Black Moranth Heavy infantry to the fortress overlooking Three Sisters. There he ignored the advice of High Mage Ussü and Commander Borun by placing fifteen thousand of his soldiers on the other side of the Ancy River bridge from his main body of troops.[5]

The Malazan 4th Army led by Divisional Fist Rillish Jal Keth managed to seize the bridge in a stealth attack, but his four thousand poorly supplied soldiers could not overcome the Envoy's numerical advantage. Even the arrival of High Fist Greymane's ten thousand soldiers from the 4th and 8th Armies could not turn the tide. It was the Envoy's own arrogance that led to his downfall. He actively sought the removal of the High Mage and Commander Borun whose competent advice he saw as insubordinate. When word of their recall came from the Overlord, the Envoy humiliated the pair in a public ceremony and happily allowed the Moranth commander to depart with his troops.[6]

Greymane took advantage of the disappearance of the enemy's elite soldiers and broke through the Envoy's defenses across the bridge. At the same time, Enesh-jer was confronted in his private chambers by the Claw Faro, who informed him that Greymane would be specifically harsh on those nobles who had betrayed him during the Korelri Campaign. Given a choice between dying at the hands of a Claw or at Greymane's, Enesh-jer chose to be killed by the Claw.[7]

Speculations[]

While the Claw who confronted Enesh-jer was not specifically named as Faro, his physical description was identical to the Claw serving in Sergeant Goss' 17th Squad.
