Malazan Empire

"I hate this place. These people would bend over for donkeys if they had gold."
―Kyle[src]

Delanss (sometimes spelled Delans) was the capital city of Delanss Island, the second most populous of the Falari Isles north of Quon Tali.[1] Its nearest neighbours were Iguan to the east and Wett to the west.[2]

Delanss was a closed, tightly knit society whose "capitulation to its Malazan invaders seemed to have amounted to no more than changing the colour of the flags atop the harbour fortress" although Talian was the land's unofficial second tongue.[3]

The city was the home of several prestigious fighting academies, including Grieg's Academy, the School of the Curved Blade, and the Black Falcon School.[4]

Its wealthy elite dressed in a fashion that conspicuously displayed their status. An aristocratic male might wear rounded cloth hats decked with semi-precious stones, thick fur-trimmed robes, long silver chains around the neck, and multiple gemmed rings.[5]

The Delanssian sigil portrayed a tree and shield.[6]

Notable residents[]

  • Best, blackmarketeer and extortionist
  • Janul, former High Fist and Tyrant

In Return of the Crimson Guard[]

During the time of unrest prior to the Malazan civil war, former High Fist Janul had named himself Tyrant of Delanss.[7]

In Stonewielder[]

After the Malazan civil war, Greymane and Kyle made their home in the city. Greymane unsuccessfully attempted to run a fighting academy there.[8]

In Forge of the High Mage[]

As part of his plans to conquer Falar, Malazan Emperor Kellanved sent a fleet of freebooters to spread out and terrorise the local islands and settlements. While passing along Delanss Island's northern coast, the crew of the Sea Glimmer was stopped by a galley outside Delanss. Gianna was angered to learn that the island's capital city was prepared only to defend itself after driving off the attackers and had no interest in freeing neighbouring Iguan or Belid, which remained under foreign control.[9] When the Guiding Council of the Faith sought to coordinate a unified response between the islands, Delanss begged off, citing a lack of vessels to transport any putative force.[10]
