Chem or Chem'esh'el, an ancient sea deity, was the object of an old sea cult in Malaz City and on the rest of Malaz Island. Believers prayed to Chem for the safety of themselves and of others.[1]

Shell of the Crimson Guard believed that Chem was another of the many names of Mael.[2]
In Deadhouse Landing[]
Before the existence of the Malazan Empire, Malaz City regularly celebrated a number of festivals devoted solely to Chem.[3]
