"A god walked the streets of Darujhistan. In itself, never a good thing. That this particular god was the harvester of souls [i.e., Hood] meant that…not only was his manifestation unwelcome, but his gift amounted to unmitigated slaughter, rippling out to overwhelm thousands of inhabitants…[in] cruel indifference…"
Hood travelling, in his mortal form, through Darujhistan – 'touching' people's lives as he passed by[src]

Besk was an inhabitant of Darujhistan. He was a neighbor of Surna, her abusive husband, Skilles Naver, and their two sons - who were badly mistreated by their father. Besk, as he lived next door, was familiar with the dangerous, ugly situation in which Surna and her children found themselves. Skilles Naver thought of him as puny and rat-faced.[1]

In Toll the Hounds[]

On the last night of the Gedderone Fête, when Hood walked the streets of Darujhistan harvesting souls, Surna finally decided to run away from her husband with Besk's aid, taking the boys with her. She was in the middle of packing when Skilles unexpectedly came home from Gajjet's Bar. She had just enough time to push her sons out into the corridor for Besk to collect, so that he could escape with them to safety. Then, she turned to face Skilles who was preparing to attack her with murder in his eyes. Skilles never even saw the knife she fatally thrust under her husband's chin and then straight up into his brain, thus ending any need for Surna or her sons to run away after all.[2]
