Bered was a sergeant of the Wardens of the Outer Reach. He was a squat man of middle years.[1]
In Forge of Darkness[]
Bered was the leader of a squad of Wardens accompanying Captains Kagamandra Tulas and Sharenas Ankhadu of Urusander's Legion to the shore of the Vitr. Their mission was to investigate Warden Captain Finarra Stone's claim of invaders from the deadly sea and to determine the fate of Kagamandra's missing betrothed, Warden Faror Hend.[2] They confirmed Stone's account of the body of a monstrous beast on the beach and recovered her saddle and weapons. They also discovered what appeared to be the corpse of a giant dragon lying half in the water further down the shoreline.[3] After reporting back, Bered accompanied the Wardens' commander, Calat Hustain, back to the Vitr to further investigate the strange events there.[4]

When Bered first appears in Forge of Darkness his rank is incorrectly stated as captain. But in later appearances in the book he is identified as a sergeant. When he reappears in Fall of Light he is incorrectly named Sergeant Bursa. Steven Erikson mentions in a 2013 interview that Forge of Darkness features two characters named Bursa. Perhaps one character was renamed during the editorial stage and he forgot while writing the next novel.[5]
